Unfortunately, we do not have opportunities for new graduate students in our group now (Fall 2024). Funding is in particularly short supply; unless this changes, we are unlikely to take on new students in the near term. You are welcome to contact Hughes to discuss this in more detail, but please bear in mind that this is a strong boundary condition on what I am able to do.

We try to have regular UROP involvement in our group’s activities, but have not had bandwidth for a new UROP project since the peak of the coronavirus pandemic. (Bear in mind that the PI had a heavy departmental administrative role during this time.) This may be on the cusp of changing; inquiries welcome, but please be patient while we assess what is possible and realistic.

We do not at present have funding to support a new postdoc, but may be able to provide supplementary support if you are interested in working at MIT with some kind of external fellowship. I am also happy to discuss possibilities related to certain MIT fellowships (e.g., the Pappalardo Fellowship, the Kavli Fellowship), though (especially regarding the Pappalardo) I may not be able to offer much concrete advice. Please email Hughes if you are interested in exploring this.

We regularly receive requests to join the Hughes research group for a short “internship” from people outside of MIT. Please note that unless there is a pre-existing research relationship (e.g., Hughes or another group member is collaborating with your group), we do not take ever take anyone on in such a fashion. The short timeframe requested is not long enough for someone to make a meaningful contribution to ongoing work; and, if we have time to supervise a new student, it will be an MIT student. Working with MIT students is our top priority.
