Welcome to the webpage of the research group of Professor Scott A. Hughes at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Our group is a part of MIT’s Department of Physics and the MIT Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research.

We study astrophysical systems with extremely strong gravity in which general relativity must be used to accurately model the systems’ dynamics. A good portion of our work is on issues relating to gravitational-wave source modeling and gravitational-wave measurement with detectors such as LIGO and LISA. A common theme in much of our work is the creative use (and occasional abuse) of general relativistic perturbation theory.

Our work is supported by the National Science Foundation, NASA, the MISTI Program, the MIT Department of Physics, and the MIT School of Science, particularly the Carl G. and Shirley Sontheimer Research Fund. In the past, we have also been supported by MIT’s Class of 1956, MIT’s Solomon Buchsbaum Fund, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics. We are extremely grateful for their support, without which this work would not be possible.
